We are featuring a particularly beautiful example of the De Bethune collection, the DB28 Limited edition (# 9 of 50) Revolving 3D Spherical Moon, Tourbillon Zirconium DB28TIS8NLE, in a Titanium and Zirconium round shaped case measuring 42.5mm diameter. It has a fixed Titanium bezel, with Zirconiumlugs. The lugs are spring loaded making the watch extremely comfortable on the wrist. It has a Mechanical movement, with a Power Reserve up to ± 144 hours.  It has a spectacular Grey colored Skeleton dial with Titanium minute and hour hands.  

Completing the beautiful dial is a Revolving 3D SphericalMoon phase at 6 o'clock.  The crown is placed at the top of the dial in the 12 o’clock position rather than the side 3 o’clock. History

IWC, a Swiss company based in the German speaking east of Switzerland was actually founded by an American.

In 1868, an American engineer and watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones (1841–1916) ^[5] who had been a director of E. Howard & Co., in Boston, then America's leading watchmaking company, founded the International Watch Company with the intention of combining the craftsmanship of the Swiss with the modern engineering technology from the U.S. to manufacture movements and watch parts for the American market. Together, they laid the foundations for the only watch manufacturer in north-eastern Switzerland- The International Watch Company in Schaffhausen.

Current ownership

In July 2000, IWC was acquired by Richemont, a Zug-based luxury goods group, for over $3 billion. Richemont is the holding company of some of the world’s best known watch brands and the synergy created by this is beneficial for all of the brands it owns, as they are comfortable allowing their brands to be managed as independent entities, yet able to take advantage of the economies of scale that come from such concentrated purchasing power. IWC was guaranteed that it would continue to be managed by its executives and that group runs the company today.

Technology

Movements in the bulk of IWC's range of watches and chronographs (including the Portuguese Chronograph) use movements from Swatch-owned ETA. Significant modifications are made to the completed ETA 2892 by IWC at the manufacture to create the Caliber 30110, as is the case with Calibers 79230/79320/79350, which are modified ETA/Valjoux 7750 movements.

Movements not based on ETA movements include the Caliber 5000 and the Caliber 8000, which use the Pellaton winding system, and the pocket watch movements used in the Portuguese F.A. Jones and other IWC pocket watches.

Today IWC manufacture a wide range of different models including the very popular Big Pilot line and the Portuguese line. Their watches are universally admired as a flagship Swiss watch brand and are sought after by collectors and people who value quality and superb design. Tourbillons are the pinnacle of mechanical watch movements, first invented in 1795 by watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet, designed originally to counteract the effects of gravity and position in mechanical watch movements. A Tourbillon essentially mounts the watch balance wheel and escapement in a rotating cage which averages out errors caused by gravity, or moving a watch into different positions as the wearer moves around.

Today Tourbillons represent a dedication to craftsmanship and skill, and take many hours of work by talented watchmakers to build and assemble. They are found in the highest priced watches in a manufacturer's range and are rare and very collectible.

In 1983, after much research and dedication, Franck Muller presented his first wristwatches. They all had a complicated movements that had been created solely by him.

Muller realized that there was a demand in the market for collectors in search of unique timepieces and he set about creating a company to meet some of that demand.

In order to meet that demand, every year since then, he has succeeded in unveiling a World Premiere, assembling complications that have never been created before. Franck Muller recognized very early on that the Tourbillon was an important scientific invention. It was created over 200 years ago in an attempt to achieve greater accuracy for timepieces. Franck created, for the first time ever, a Tourbillon visible from the front. Contrary to all other brands Tourbillons in which it could only be seen from the back. His revolutionary new design and subsequent Grand Complications became the cornerstone for Franck Muller being recognized as the "Master of Complications".

Watchland

Remaining faithful to its roots, Franck Muller Genève is established in the very same village where Franck started his activity in 1983, namely Genthod, in the neighbouring countryside of Geneva. 

It is in this elegant and friendly atmosphere that the Franck Muller watches are designed and made.  In response to the growing success experienced by the brand, two new buildings in the same style were built and the Watchland was finally completed in 2001.

Unique Design

 Franck Muller watches became easily identifiable thanks to their Cintrée Curvex shape that is commonly recognized as the brand’s most significant silhouette.  For the brand, it quickly became a great success and a way to express its unique identity, assert its DNA and demonstrate its know-how in case manufacturing.

Since the 1980s, Franck Muller has become a name synonymous with beautiful finishing and unique designs.  Muller has tied his name to a brand that has established a series of exceptional timepieces that, while originally avant-garde, have become embraced and often copied.

From its creation, the Cintrée Curvex case was very unique.  Indeed, the Haute Horlogerie was bound by tradition and consequently not very open to innovation, especially in terms of design.  At the time, there were plenty of round watches and perhaps a few rectangular ones, but there was nothing like Franck Muller’s Curvex.  So it was a bold move to introduce, in 1992, something previously nonexistent on the market; a tonneau curved body in 3 dimensions involving great technical difficulties in manufacturing. 

Franck Muller watches became easily identifiable due to their tonneau shape that is commonly recognized as the brand’s most significant silhouette. For the brand, it quickly became a great success and a way to express its unique identity, assert its DNA and demonstrate its know-how in case manufacturing.

Similarly, Franck Muller timepieces became instantly recognizable for their unique and beautiful numeral design.  The dials on the Cintrée Curvex models are also very complex to produce.  For example, they must be perfectly curved to follow the shape of the case, but must still have the best guilloche, printing quality and precision.  Introducing dials in gorgeous vibrant colors such as royal blue was also initiated by Franck Muller and showed all the hallmark of a classic Franck Muller design.

Mauricio returned from a buying trip to New York last week and he brought back some exceptional watches from Hublot, Zenith, Vacheron Constantin, Omega and Bell & Ross.

The Gevril name in watchmaking, dating back to the 1750’s, was acquired by Samuel Friedman in 2001, and he has brought the brand back into the mainstream of Swiss Watch production.

www.ClassWatches.com has obtained a large shipment of Gevril’s finest watches and is proud to offer them for sale to its customers.

Jacques Gevril was born in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1721. In 1743, he created his first chronometer; in 1744, his first repetition dial and in 1758, he was one of the first Swiss exporters, specifically to the king of Spain. The history of the family of Gevril goes back to the 1500s and there were several watchmakers in the family.

Friedmann explains. "We found a watch in a museum in Geneva from Daniel Gevril and as a result we saw that the dial we are using today is very similar to that watch. I didn't want to go away from the old style dials, even when I made the new collections. I wanted to make sure that the new watches have something in common with past watches. I want to go closer to the past, because I feel that this will be our success, using today's technology with the core being from the historical foundation."

Friedmann introduced Gevril at probably the worst possible time, just before September 11, 2001, but he persevered through the tough retail markets and today Gevril watches are prized among watch connoisseurs.

 Gevril's products, made in the brand's factory in Tramelan, Switzerland, are an interesting mix of old and new. The designs have a taste of tradition and what has come before, but there are new twists and special design elements that really distinguish the brand. In addition, the attention to detail and focus on quality is immediately apparent.

"The Avenue of Americas is really the product that makes us stand out," Friedmann says. "It's a case design from the 1920s that we found in some old books in a small factory in Switzerland. We use a round mechanical movement and we added an innovation in the pushers - the pushers are straight not round. We used a beveled dial with raised numbers, then we hand paint the numbers. If you bevel a dial and you apply the numbers, after two or three years the numbers might fall off.

"We use a new mechanism with the day /date/moon - it has four different pushers to change the moon and the date," he adds. "The sapphire crystal on the front and back is beveled. We were careful about the way the watch lays on the wrist, because the most important detail is when the consumer wears the watch. I care that the customer is proud to wear Gevril."

The newest watch for Gevril is the Serenade, a dual time zone watch that features a patented movement with a 23 carat gold rotor, and a very interesting way of indicating night or day in the different time zones. The watch has two time zone windows that gracefully change from white for day to black for night, allowing the wearer to keep track of days and nights in two time zones without effort. The Serenade is available in 18 carat rose gold, 18 carat white gold or platinum.

"We call it the Serenade because it takes twenty or thirty minutes to change over from day to night, much the same way that the sun goes down and the night comes up," Friedmann explains. "The watch brings together day and night. We feel very proud of this watch, which is limited to 50 pieces worldwide."

In August 2008, Richemont Group acquired 60% of Roger Dubuis SA. Richemont, based in Geneva, said the acquisition was a private transaction with Carlos Dias, chief executable officer and primary shareholder of Roger Dubuis SA. Richemont plans to continue manufacturing watches under the 'Roger Dubuis' name.
